Thanksgiving has different meanings to some. Many families, will travel to their hometown destinations to celebrate with friends and family. To others, it becomes a day of sadness because they are home alone or missing loved ones that are no longer here. Some are battling sickness and overwhelming life situations and the thought of giving thanks, brings emptiness and hopelessness.
For five years, we have spent our Thanksgiving Day away from family. This year we have been blessed to be able to celebrate with family at home. I am reminded of when the disciples and Jesus were gathered around the table enjoying the company of each other. I picture Jesus sitting back and watching the disciples engaging in conversation, listening and just focusing on each person that sat with him. Of course we know that the last supper held such a deep meaning and purpose, for which we take communion today. Afterwards, it led to Betrayal, denial, confusion, and a house divided, full of accusations and feelings of hopelessness. Society ultimately wanted to destroy and kill Jesus the king of the Jews. Jesus was fulfilling and revealing His grace to a society, who hated him and sought to destroy him. Yet, Jesus displayed a heart of love and compassion fulfilling His purpose for all.
Our society hasn’t changed much, if you look at what is happening in the world today.
I want to encourage you to name the one thing that seems untouchable, seems unchanging and give it to God. Release it to Him and allow Jesus to receive that thing you have held on to so deeply. My Thanksgiving prayer is that you allow God to reveal himself through you to be a person who shows love and compassion to others. Remember, Jesus fulfilled everything you have need of through His love and sacrifice on the cross. His grace is extended to you. With Thanksgiving, I receive His grace and His love toward me. I wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving Day.
