On July 4, 1776, Congress officially approved the Declaration of Independence. In response to this momentous declaration of the united colonies’ separation from Great Britain, John Adams wrote these insightful words in a letter to his wife concerning the remembrance of this day, now known as Independence Day:
I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.
John Adams
Today, Americans from sea to shining sea will gather family, friends, and neighbors to celebrate their liberty with cookouts. The sounds of children will fill the air as patriotic music pulls at our hearts. Tonight Fireworks will be painted overhead on a canvas of clear night sky. Let’s not forget who created the heavens and the earth. The freedoms that past generations have fought through their sacrifice and death so that the generations of today can enjoy the freedom we have in this country.
I am reminded of the scripture in Exodus 20:5-6, it says that God is a jealous God, it says that he will show us love to a thousand generations to those who love me and keep my commandments.
God’s promise is powerful and I think that believing parents have a powerful influence to train up your children to love God, to love this country, and share the love of Christ to those around us. Those of you with little ones still at home can proclaim God’s blessings over them. Grandparents, speak it over your grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Lord, you said a thousand generations of blessings. I ask for a thousand generations of blessings for America, for each family, pour out your Spirit upon this nation, and upon your church. So I speak blessings upon you and your families today, may the favor of God rest upon you. God Bless America!
